80*s POWER revolution...

"Built for Speed" is the tagline for this unbelievably radical and independent surfer born in 1968. Matt Archbold's tagline is etched on the back of his neck, and he's been burning rubber in the competitive waters for over 20 years. From single-fin surfboards to a retro glitter board, he is still ripping it. A regular guy with a ready smile, he doesn't say much but talk to him about surfing or ask him about his tow kids, his eyes light up with enthusiasm. Ruby Ann and Ford Matthew are the lights of his life. Ford is an aspiring surfer following in his dad's wave-manuevering orbit. Influenced by the extreme free-styling surfing of Martin Potter, Archy started his pro career as one of the fastest and most extreme surfers in the world. Having surfed numerous contests internationally and domestically, he burned out on the political scene of corporate competition.

All he wanted to do was surf, so he bailed on contests in 1993 and moved to Hawaiiii to concentrate on his life's passion. Matt has been able to maintain his pro status and still get paid without surfing contests. He now lives Newport Beach, California and travels with surf photographers to exotic locales including Indonesia, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Fiji and France. Still living up to his tagline, Archy's love for speed extends to his pastime of skateboarding, restoring old cars and enjoying his vast collection of punk rock. However, his slower flip side interests in pop cultural music seem to emulate his persona with his charisma of Elvis, edginess of Cash and the smooth aplomb of Sinatra. In fact, the lyrics to Sinatra's "My Way"* could be his theme song.
